Born in Ocala , Florida on May 3, 1984, Ryan was an all around athlete trying his hand in many different sports. It wasn't until high school that he fell into running due to his mother's influence. Ryan set the school records at Belleview High School in Central Florida in the 1600m (4:20), 3200m (9:25), and 5K Cross Country (15:12) in his junior year before missing his senior because of an injury.

Ryan was recruited to Oklahoma State University out of high school in 2002 and immediately realized his love for running. He red shirted his first year running cross country and track unattached throughout the region. As a redshirt freshman Ryan ran 3:47 in the 1500m and 8:21 in the 3000m on the track. In his redshirt sophomore track season he was injury plagued and unable to compete. By the end of Ryan's career at OSU he had dropped his times to 3:42 in the 1500m, 1:52 in the 800m, and 14:31 in the 5000m on the track. Ryan was also on the Varsity Cross Country team all five years at Oklahoma State .

Ryan holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Accounting from OSU and now works for PricewaterhouseCoopers, a public accounting firm in Tulsa , while training for the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 1500m.
